Frequently Asked Questions

FOR EVERYONE:

  1. Who are we?
We’re Stuyvesant High School’s Honor Society and we uphold the four pillars of ARISTA: character, leadership, scholarship, and service.

  2. How/When do we apply?
Applications are released in February. They consist of a list of any/all extracurricular activities, one short response, and two extended responses. Students must have a 92.0+ GPA to apply (this is the only aspect of the application that depends on grades). Results are released in April. Current sophomores and juniors can apply. Members must join ARISTA in their sophomore year if they want to be on the Executive Council their following year.

  3. If we are not accepted into ARISTA, can we appeal/reapply?
Appeals are open for approximately a month after results are released. The appeal consists of one extended response as well as an extensive review of your previous application and consulting with your guidance counselor. If you are not accepted when you are a sophomore, you can reapply next year as a junior. You cannot reapply if you are not accepted as a junior (i.e. in senior year).

  4. How do I get paired up with a peer tutor?
First, create an account through ARISTA (located at the top right of the website). Then you will be able to pair up with a tutor by requesting the specific subject as well as additional descriptions.

  5. Do I get to choose my tutors?
No, all pairings are randomized and there will be no manual pairing outside of the Executive Council. However, you can request to repair with a former tutor.

  6. How can we contact ARISTA?
You can contact ARISTA through the Email Us feature on the ARISTA website and direct your concerns to the appropriate committee.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

  1. How do we apply to be part of the Executive Council?
During the spring semester of each year, around April, applications for the following year’s EC will be released. Applications will require a written portion, a teacher recommendation and later an interview. Results will be released a few weeks after the interviews.

  2. What does it mean to join a committee/What are the three committees?
Members who wish to go above and beyond the credit requirements for general members can find an outlet for their dedication in one of the three committees, within which they will work closely with the Executive Council to further serve to improve ARISTA. The three committees are the Events Committee, the Operations Committee, and the Web Development Committee.

The ARISTA Events Committee is responsible for finding community service events (i.e. contacting and working with event coordinators to establish volunteer opportunities for ARISTA members). Committee members are also responsible for leading the events on the day of, directing the volunteers, and overseeing the crediting of volunteers' events.

The ARISTA Operations Committee is a largely supervisory committee tasked with managing the ARISTA tutoring department, assisting web development/events committees, stepping forward in times of emergencies, and fielding questions from tutees, tutors, parents, faculty, etc.

The ARISTA Web Development Committee is held responsible for the important task of maintaining and updating the website, which is an integral part of ARISTA operations—crediting, event confirmations, and tutoring setup are all conducted online. Apply if you are interested in Computer Science!

  3. How can we join a committee?
Applications are released near the end of May and are open to both new and returning members. The application consists of a written portion and an interview that is conducted in June. Results are released by the end of June.

  4. How many credits do I need per semester?
Requirements can be found under Information > Info for Members. Requirements vary based on whether you are a general member or on one of the three committees.

  5. What happens to my credits if I exceed the given requirement per semester?
There is a rollover credit system implemented. Every four extra credits in tutoring will become one credit in the next semester. Every five credits in events will become one credit in the next semester.

TUTORING QUESTIONS

  1. How can we fulfill our tutoring credits?
You can fill your tutoring credits by partaking in tutoring events which include: AIS Sessions, csDojo, and essay revisions (through the website). AT LEAST four credits must come from peer tutoring. As a peer tutor, you will be matched up with a student in a subject that you have received at least a 90 in.

  2. Are there any requirements in order to partake in a tutoring event?
Working in the csDojo requires an application and/or special permission. All AIS sessions require a 90+ in the given subject except for Pre-Calculus which requires Mr. Sterr’s explicit permission.

  3. What happens if I cannot meet all of my tutoring credits by the time a given semester ends?
You will be given strikes based on the amount of credits missing for tutoring. The more credits you are missing, the more strikes you will receive.

EVENTS QUESTIONS

  1. How can we fulfill our events credits?
You can fulfill your events credits by doing events that are listed on the events calendars. AT LEAST seven credits must come from out-of-school events. The remaining credits can come from other out-of-school events or in-school event.

  2. Are there any mandatory events?
Stuyvesant’s Open House (near the beginning of the school year) and Stuyvesant’s Parent-Teacher Conference (both in the fall and in the spring) are both mandatory.

  3. How can I recommend an event?
Click on “Events” on the navigation bar of the ARISTA website. On the side of the Events General Calendar, there is a menu. One of the links on the menu directs you to the Event Recommendation Form, which you can fill out.

  4. If I am participating in an event that another volunteer organization (ie Red Cross/Key Club) is a part of, can I get hours for both organizations?
No, hours will only be credited for one organization, typically ARISTA.

  5. What happens if I cannot meet all of my events credits by the time a given semester ends?
You will be given strikes based on the amount of credits missing for events. The more credits you are missing, the more strikes you will receive. If you did not fulfill the events credit requirements by a significant margin, removal from ARISTA is possible.

  6. What happens if I show up late to an event?
You will be docked that many credits thus. If you are late by an hour you will be docked an hour. However, excessive lateness will be noted and extreme lateness will result in a strike.

  7. What happens if I cannot attend an event that I signed up for?
If you have signed up for an event, but have yet to receive a CONFIRMATION email, then you can simply un-signup for the event. No additional steps need to be taken.
If you signed up for an event and received a confirmation email, then check to see if there is a waitlist. If there IS a waitlist, then you will not be responsible for finding a substitute. If there is NO waitlist, then you must find a substitute and alert the Event Leaders at least 48 hours prior to the event. Refusal to do this will result in a strike.
